*If a member has turned 70 ½ by December 31, 2019, they must take a RMD (required minimum distribution) in 2019 and all subsequent years.

Roth IRA

A type of retirement savings that allows after tax contributions. Contributions must come from earned income.  After the age of 59 ½ and have had the account for at least five years, you are free to withdraw as little or as much as you’d like without a penalty. Consult your tax advisor for advice.

Coverdell (Educational Savings Account)

A trust or custodial account designed to help families pay for education.  A Coverdell ESA offers tax-free earnings growth and tax-free withdrawals when the funds are spent on educational expenses.

Trust Accounts

A trust is an arrangement that allows a third party, or trustee, to hold assets on behalf of a beneficiary or beneficiaries.  Trusts can be arranged in many ways and can specify exactly how and when the assets pass to the beneficiaries.  The most common trusts are:

  • A Revocable Living Trust - This type of trust is set up in order to have some assets avoid the probate process when the grantor dies.  The grantor is often the trustee in these trusts, in charge of the assets until death.  This kind of trust remains subject to estate taxes.
  • An Irrevocable Living Trust - This kind of trust is often used in order to transfer assets to another person or entity.  It removes the assets from the grantor’s estate, thereby reducing or eliminating estate taxes.
  • A Testamentary Trust - A testamentary trust is a legal and fiduciary relationship created through explicit instructions in a deceased's will. A testamentary trust goes into effect upon an individual's death and is commonly used when someone wants to leave assets to a beneficiary, but doesn't want the beneficiary to receive those assets until a specified time. A testamentary trust is irrevocable after the death of the testator.
